Basic Info Bio DEMETER was the great Olympian goddess of agriculture, grain, and bread, the prime sustenance of mankind. She also presided over the foremost of the Mystery Cults which promised its intiates the path to a blessed afterlife. Demeter was depicted as a mature woman, often crowned and holding sheafs of wheat and and a torch. Parents; * Kronos: Titan God of Time and the Ages. Regarded as destructive and all-devouring. * Rhea: Titanis Mother of the Gods. Goddess of Female fertility, motherhood and generation. Siblings; * Hera * Zeus * Poseidon * Hestia * Haides Children; * Persephone (by Zeus): Goddess of the Grain. * Zagreus (by Zeus): Killed by the Titans. Reborn as Semele. * Despoina (by Poseidon): Goddess of Mystery. * Arion (by Poseidon): Divine, swift immortal horse. * Plutus (by Iasion): God of Wealth. * Philomelus/Bootes (by Iasion): Demi-God. Invented the wheel and plough. * Eubolus (by Karmanor): Demi-God. Hero of the Sacred Swine. Ploughing and the planting of the grain seed. * Khrysothemis (by Karmanor): Demi-goddess of the harvest festival * Amphitheus (by Triptolemus). Divine Lovers; * Zeus: The King of the Gods and Demeter mated in the form of intertwining serpents. From this union the goddess Persephone was born. || "[Zeus naming his finest loves:] I loved the queen Demeter of the lovely tresses." - Homer, Iliad 14.326 * Poseidon: The great God of the Sea pursued Demeter when she was mourning the loss of her daughter Persephone. The goddess took the form of a horse and hid amongst the herds of Arkadian Onkios, where Poseidon found her and assuming the form of a stallion raped the goddess. She bore him two children - the horse Areion and the goddess Despoine. Mortal Lovers; * Iasion: A Prince of the Island of Samothrake or Krete (in the Greek Aegean) who lay with Demeter in a thrice ploughed field and was struck down by a thunderbolt by the jealous Zeus. She bore him twin sons, Ploutos and Philomelos. * Karmanor: A Lord of Tarrha, Krete (in the Greek Aegean) who was loved by the goddess Demeter. She bore him a son Eubouleos and a daughter Khrysothemis. He was probably the same as Iasion. * Mekon: A man loved by the goddess Demeter who was metamorphosed into a poppy flower. WRATH * Askalabos: A man of Argos (in Southern Greece) who was transformed into a spotted gecko by Demeter as punishment for mocking the goddess' ravenous drinking of meal as she rested during the search for her daughter. * Askalapos: An Underworld Daimon who was transformed by Demeter into a lizard or screech-owl as punishment for reporting to Haides that her daughter had tasted the fruit of the pomegranate. * Kolontas: A man Argos (in Southern Greece) who was burnt up within his house as punishment for driving Demeter away when she sought his hospitality in the search for her daughter. * Minthe:An Underworld Nymphe who was loved by the god Haides but abandoned when he fell in love with Persephone. When she complained to be superior to the goddess and that she would win back the heart of the god, Demeter was furious and transformed her into a mint plant. * Poseidon: Demeter brought famine to the earth after Poseidon raped her in the form of a horse, while she was searching for her daughter Persephone. * The Seirenes: Aitolian Nymphai and handmaidens of Persephone who were transformed into bird-like monsters by Demeter as punishment for refusing to help in the search for their mistress. According to some, the transformation was a blessing, bestowed upon the Seirenes at their own request. * Zeus: The King of the Gods felt the wrath of Demeter when he gave her daughter Persephone away to Haides. In retaliation she brought deadly starvation to the race of man, threatening to destroy them, if her daughter were not returned. |
